talk about....Is Australia a good global citizen? Australia is a rich country with values of care and compassion and giving others a 'fair go'. When there is a need there is generally a strong response with offers of money, goods, personal time and knowledge. The Australian Government has an overseas aid program which aims to assist developing countries reduce poverty and achieve sustainable development, in line with Australia's national interest. But is it doing enough? In 2007-08 the Australian Government plans to spend almost $3.155 billion on development assistance. This is an estimated 0.30% of Gross National Income for the year, of which only 11% or $355.9m is to be given to Papua New Guinea. Overseas aid improves our regional security and helps partner governments improve law and order, prevent and recover from conflict, and manage a range of threats to security such as people trafficking, illicit drugs, HIV/AIDS and other communicable diseases. Is the Australian Government doing enough for its neighbours when it comes to foreign aid?Should Australia do more for the poor in other countries?(source www.globaleducation.edna.edu.au )

Almost 30% of the world’s population of children live in a state of abject poverty. Where they live DOES determine how and whether or not they will reach adulthood. It determines their future, their state of health, their access to education, their growth and their ability to positively impact their world.
In order to determine a better future for Children in PNG, we are building a partnership between Compassion Australia and The Gateway Foundation to meet the needs of the most vulnerable children.

We recognize that children move through different phases in development and various stages in life. Child Survival
(Prenatal - 5 years)

Minimum monthly Commitment: $20
Program focus areas:

  • Prenatal care
  • Immunisation,
  • basic health care & nutrition
  • Hygiene & health care training for primary care-givers
  • Progression to Child Development Program
  • Spiritual nurture

Child Development
(Primary & Secondary School Years)

Minimum Monthly Commitment:  $40
Program focus areas:

  • Breakfast program
  • Education, uniform & transport costs
  • Health care
  • After-school program & activities
  • Christian teaching

Leadership Development
Minimum monthly commitment: $400

This program is designed to identify outstanding young Christian men & women and develop their potential as leaders and contributors in their families, churches and communities.

Program focus areas include:

  • Tertiary education and vocational training and associated costs
  • Mentoring programs
  • Servant leadership programs
  • Christian leadership training

Community Development
Minimum Monthly Commitment: $100

In partnership with the local church in PNG, we will continue to provide practical help in at-risk communities, through projects like:

  • Clean water systems
  • Sanitation
  • Power connection
  • Buildings & community infrastructure

We will continue our commitment to practically equip communities with buildings, infrastructure, resources and Leadership Development to ensure that our efforts to release the community and its children from poverty in all its forms, is permanent.
